The place where you turned around was where I parked and walked the rest of the way. I’m a young-ish person but that road SCARED a few years off my life!

I’m old enough to remember when interstate markers were sequential by exit, and not by mileage from the state line. That was a BIG adjustment when they suddenly changed all the exit numbers! Good tip, BTW.

They give a better indication of where you are and how far it is to a hotel if you elect to call ahead.

Can you just go to see the tomb without having to pay as I will not have time to do the tours?

We reached the last spot where we could turn around before going to the final top. It was scary turning around, but we both decided it wasn’t meant for us to see the very tip top. I’m sure the view is breathtaking, but my breath was already taken…lol. We’re Senior adults and knew we didn’t want that to cause our death. Best of luck to future endeavors for young people!.

Thanks so much for your response, I’ve been watching videos from WNC and they have been devastating – I feel so sorry for all of them. We will be traveling from Texas so I’m not sure it would be worth it to drive all that way just for the portion of the BRP that is in VA.

Comment on The Complete Travel Guide to the Foothills Parkway in Great Smoky Mountains National Park by Jason Barnette https://www.roadtripsandcoffee.com/foothills-parkway-great-smoky-mountains-national-park/#comment-28421 Thu, 03 Oct 2024 16:00:15 +0000 https://www.roadtripsandcoffee.com/?p=46180#comment-28421 In reply to Laurie S..

Laurie, I would run into this problem all the time on the Blue Ridge Parkway. So, I finally wrote an article about it. However, I haven’t written one about the Foothills Parkway yet. The best I can tell you right now is the best place to see sunrise this time of year is south on the Foothills Parkway from US Highway 321. There are several overlooks on the southside of the parkway with great views of sunrise. For sunset, Caylor Gap should still be a good place. But do keep in mind you’ll never see the horizon from the mountains, so you’ll always lose the light about 15 minutes early. Keep an eye out for partly cloudy days – those are the best for catching pretty colors after the sun disappears behind a mountain.
